Still the Thrush Sings  Poems

by Brad Marion
Still the Thrush Sings

A collection of poems from 2000 through 2003, arranged in six sections: “Powerless Prayers,” “In Springtime Won't You Burn Your Straw Flowers,” “Road Kill,” “The Dancers,” “Ripe,” and “With Sheets Turned Down.”

SHE TAUGHT HIM THE GODS

Speaking of them was like a ministry
To the world that generated powerful waves
And gentle foam that play together
On the edges of boundless seas…

Too many stars in the sky to count,
The restless pursuit of Orion, the hunter,
In deep winter, when she spoke of the god's
Carnal desires…

The lesser spirits were more comfortable
To associate with: the snow sprites that dance
Among the falling flakes, the household devils
That hide little things away, the faeries who whisper.
Gentle phrases from under our pillows…

How could one deny it all? Her lips are moist,
Her bosom heaves. The light grows dim.
Silent shapes move in the corners.
And night, night pulls us into the embrace.
